Rwanda Plan Cost

Rwanda asylum plan: What will it cost?

The UK government has already paid Rwanda about £300 million, even though the program has yet to begin.

The total cost of the program is expected to be at least £370 million over five years.

The UK government has paid £240 million to Rwanda by the end of 2023. However, the total payment will be at least £370 million over five years, according to the National Audit Office.

The UK and Rwanda Migration and Economic Development Partnership (also known as the Rwanda asylum plan) was announced in a speech by British Prime Minister Boris Johnson in April 2022. The plan aims to deter people from making dangerous journeys to the UK and to reduce the number of asylum seekers in the UK.

Under the plan, people who arrive in the UK illegally will be sent to Rwanda to have their asylum claims processed. If their claims are successful, they will be resettled in Rwanda. If their claims are unsuccessful, they will be returned to their home country.

The plan has been criticized by human rights groups, who say that it is inhumane and that it will not deter people from seeking asylum in the UK. The UN Refugee Agency has also expressed concerns about the plan.

The UK government has defended the plan, saying that it is necessary to deter people from making dangerous journeys to the UK and to reduce the number of asylum seekers in the UK. The government has also said that the plan is compliant with international law.

The Rwanda asylum plan is expected to be implemented in 2023. However, it is unclear whether the plan will be successful in deterring people from seeking asylum in the UK.
