The FIA has confirmed that Red Bull’s Max Verstappen is the 2022 Formula 1 World Champion. The Dutchman secured the title at the Japanese Grand Prix on Sunday, October 9, 2022, with four races remaining in the season. Verstappen’s victory marks the second time he has won the championship, having previously claimed the title in 2021.

The 25-year-old has been in dominant form this season, winning 12 of the 18 races so far. He has also claimed seven pole positions and led 421 laps, more than any other driver. Verstappen’s closest rival, Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc, is now 116 points behind in the standings, making it mathematically impossible for him to catch the Dutchman.

Verstappen’s victory has been met with praise from across the Formula 1 community. Red Bull team principal Christian Horner said: “This is an incredible achievement for Max and the whole team. He has been on top form all season and deserves to be crowned champion.”

Formula 1 CEO Stefano Domenicali added: “Max Verstappen is a worthy world champion. He has shown incredible skill and determination throughout the season. We are delighted to have him as a champion in Formula 1.”

Verstappen’s victory is a major achievement for Red Bull, which has now won its first drivers’ championship since 2013. It is also a personal triumph for Verstappen, who has become one of the most successful drivers in Formula 1 history.
