Angela Davis: A Life of Activism

Early Years and Education

Angela Yvonne Davis was born on January 26, 1944, in Birmingham, Alabama, into an African-American family. Her early life was marked by racism, segregation, and the Jim Crow era.

Becoming a Scholar and Activist

Despite the obstacles she faced, Davis excelled academically. She earned a scholarship to attend Brandeis University, where she studied philosophy and became involved in the Civil Rights Movement. She later received a PhD in philosophy from the University of California, San Diego.

Davis's work as an author, professor, and lecturer has focused on issues of race, gender, and prison abolition. She has been a prominent voice in the Black Lives Matter movement and has advocated for the release of political prisoners.
