UN Still Ashamed of Failure to Prevent Rwandan Genocide

Rwanda's President: International Community Failed Us

20th Anniversary of Rwandan Genocide Marked with Call for Action

The United Nations remains deeply ashamed of its failure to prevent the 1994 genocide in Rwanda, Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has said.

The international community's failure to effectively respond to the Rwandan genocide has been widely criticized, with the UN Security Council specifically called out for its inaction.

On the 20th anniversary of the genocide, Rwandan President Paul Kagame said that the international community had failed all of those who had been killed.

The UN Security Council responded to the genocide by withdrawing all but 270 peacekeepers from Rwanda at the behest of the Rwandan government.

The UN has since paid tribute to the one million people who were murdered in the 100-day genocide.

Ki-moon has said that the UN's failure to prevent the genocide is a reminder of the need for the international community to act decisively in the face of mass atrocities.

The Security Council has marked the 20th anniversary of the genocide by calling on all countries to take steps to prevent future atrocities.
